Hi there For years I've been listening to the holistic health gurus speak to learn about the latest research and best products, and I have notes all over the place from their conferences, their books & DVD's, internet ... eventually very esoteric areas of alternative health become familiar and exciting. The idea to create a website was triggered by my own need to consolidate what I've learned, and will continue to, and also somewhere to point someone who's asking me a lot of questions. If you're aware of what a particular mushroom extract, for example, does in your body, for me that inspires compliance. For others, they are practiced at observing their body's sensitivities to a new substance or food, and they don't want to spend a lot of time reading all about it. I like to read the minimum, and if it's something special, delve further .. because there's not enough time in the day when you're re-educating yourself against so much unethical misinformation you've been fed all your life .. it can be overwhelming. If only we were taught health as a priority at school, and not in a way that panders to the processed food and pharmaceutical industries.
This site is aimed at the reader who prefers the summary version .. from someone who's gone out and done what you haven't necessarily had time to do. My method is to research, try it myself and then write about it. Having said that, I haven't tried anywhere near everything I'd like to yet, but I do make holistic supplementation and organic foods a priority .. I don't buy anything else, which will be interpreted as anti-social on occasion. Your friends and family should appreciate and accept that this way of life is high in your values, and should not try and inflict theirs on you. I've learned to happily negotiate this.
I'm loving the way I'm eating and feeling as a result (not to mention hair, skin, nails, body) .. it's all evidence that what I'm doing works for me. I do though, want to emphasise that I'm not formally trained in any area of health. I have though, been studying informally and exchanging ideas with holistic and integrative practitioners enough to know I'm not doing anything crazy .. in terms of over-use or over-stimulation with the superfoods and herbs I consider to be basically what I live on. I advise any raw newbie to find a recommended holistic practitioner, or a good (integrative/complementary) doctor, and determine the status quo of your body before proceeding. I've learned a fair bit about testing, because it's a tricky area, and doctors are aware of this. If you don't feel you have any symptoms or issues to address you may even choose to test a bit down the track when you've established some new eating habits. Having said that, not all health issues have external symptoms, and particularly if you're "older", you would probably be wise to test right away. I've elaborated on testing in RAW 101. Eating raw, vegetarian or vegan, with holistic supplementation, particularly when you include some powerful herbalism .. minus the inorganic, processed food/cigarettes/coffee/wine/pharmaceutical medication, can do a lot towards assisting the body to bring itself back into homeostasis .. vitamin/mineral/pH balance, and correct all sorts of issues, some of which there may be no external indicators of .. and this can be achieved from merely hydrating, detoxing and providing great food. High quality food literally is medicine. I particularly love traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) (mushrooms and herbs), and Ayurveda. There are also herbs and medicinal teas I use all the time, rotationally, derived from South American (Amazon) and South African shamanism .. on their own, combined, or as bases for superfood smoothies. Their properties are incredibly protective and rejuvenating and some of the best are adaptogenic .. you don't need to know what's out of balance .. the herb or mushroom extract has the intelligence to work on whatever is necessary and bring you back to homeostasis, that is, they are dual directional .. they raise or lower levels of whatever needs addressing. Some of the more bitter herbs that initially I had to take in capsule form I've now acquired a taste for, such as some of the Chinese mushroom extract powders, particularly Reishi (pharmaceutical name, Ganoderma), which is at the top of a 30,000+ strong number of botanical extracts in the Chinese herbal system, which is thousands of years old. There are 22 of these herbs that are considered to be supertonic herbs, and those are the ones I'm focused on. I take Reishi every day. It's a superior protector on every level.
So keep in mind that as your body starts to respond and you fully appreciate the power of the substances you're introducing, you'll gradually lose interest in anything that's processed, not organic, is genetically modified, etc, and you'll naturally develop such a respect for food and your body that you'll search out food that assists your body to defend itself from our toxic world, and you'll think about what it tastes like later :) Eating this way will so satiate every cell of your body that you'll find you're not craving food as you did before .. a nutrient dense diet requires less calories, but you'll experience that as you start to understand more about balancing your foods to give you everything you need over a day. This is the easiest way to deal with any cravings or addictions .. over time everything that may have been an issue, even those you didn't know about, stabilize .. because the body has intelligence and heals itself.
I have two black English cocker spaniels who have not been neglected in all of this .. take a look at RAW PETS and you'll see that I also search out holistic supplementation that helps their little bodies also.
What this is all about to me is preventative medicine, effective strategies to treat the cause of any health issue, growing old without the aches, pains, loss of mind and operations that are absolutely avoidable, and in the process, protect animals and the Earth. Almost by default, when I started to consume only a high-grade botanically based diet, I started to think beyond my own health .. I now have an even more heightened respect and love for animals and the environment. It has become a part of me, and although I don't believe in extreme activism, I do believe in leading by example and supporting organisations that are doing wonderful work to influence change.
I invite an exchange of ideas .. see Q & A (to come), and I will be organising a BLOG. Catherine
